How the jumping began

It all began back in April, when for some reason, the Weds 'old blokes ride' suddenly started resurrecting an old area called the crystal maze which we used originally for trials but had fallen into disrepair. A few starter jumps were made & the journey began. Gradually they began to master it (remember, they are 'old blokes') & with surprisingly few crashes. Riding became even more fun as where before they would drop or roll over litlle mounds, now they could jump. The steps were gradual but eventually the first goal, 'Protein protection' was conquered. Spirits were high....

And then Jo appeared on the scene on her old £79.95 jobbie from somewhere. Went on the Sunday ride, having never done anything quite like that before, saw what the lads were doing. Seemed to think that must be what everyone does & joined in. The sound of male ego's crashing to the floor was audible. Whatever drop, trail or jump they did, Jo did. Eventually she was doing jumps that no one else would do. After a change of bike to a Kona Kikapu DL full sus. She began picking out her own lines & jumps. For any locals, judge's seat, judge's throne & judge's potty done with ne'er a thought, Coffin drop - no problem. Many more but hard to describe. For good measure she won her first downhill race at Aston Hills. Total natural.

So, the end result of this is that everyone else has upped their game & Jo has now started teaching Simon over at the lookout & Aston hills (with some help from Danny) how to jump bigger & better.

Contrary to my initial fears that there were going to be casualties galore, as long as you take it slow & build up gradually & learn the technique I think pretty much anyone can master jumping (if you want to) Because it is such fun we are building jumps into the new trails we are building & pushing our skill levels further.

A big thanks to the trail builders over at 'The lookout' of which one we know is called Colin & Ian Warby at Aston Hills for providing a superb DH area.

Jo & Iain checking out the coffin drop & then Jo doing it. The most amusing part of Jo, a girl, doing these big jumps is the comments from the lads. They come back to the shop & say in a surprised voice 'And she's just a girl, you know a regular girl!  (the hidden compliment is that she doesn't look like a russian shot putter) As a 'girl' myself I'm not sure I shouldn't be taking offence & saying what has gender got to do with it, but so many say it, it's quite sweet really.
