2003 Challenge Cup Report
by Simon Thomas
Tues
2nd
September
The
2nd
race
saw
much
closer
racing
with
sprints
for
the
finish
line.
The
most
improved
rider
was
David
Cain,
8minutes
faster
than
last
week.
He
won
the
race
&
got
50points.
But
don't
worry
JW,
David
will
be
heavily
penalized
next
week.
But
every
thing
is
up
for
grabs
for
the
last
race
next
Tuesday.
Alan
Tilling
had
the
worst
race
of
the
night
(see
picture)
and
was
looking
very
detuned
after
the
race.

Thanks
to
'Mike
the
Diver'
for
marshalling
&
'Mark
the
starter'
for
the
starting.
Next
week
there
will
be
a
BBQ
&
prize
giving
after
the
race
at
the
NT
trust
house
on
Ranmore
(ask
at
the
shop
for
location
if
unsure)
A
spectators
view.
We
arrived
slightly
behind
time
due
to
the
horrendous
traffic
in
Dorking.
A
few
of
the
competitors
were
in
the
same
boat
&
were
hurriedly
getting
bikes
out
&
speeding
off
to
the
start.
We
accidentally
shouted
encouragement
to
a
few
riders
before
we
realised
they
were
just
riding
to
the
start!
We
decided
not
to
be
so
bloodthirsty
this
week
&
took
up
position
on
'white
jam'
which
looks
very
fast,
with
the
potential
for
mistakes
but
if
everything
goes
OK
very
exhilarating.
Positioned
on
a
bend
I
managed
to
take
a
few
snaps
before
Alan(see
above)
came
into
view
going
at
quite
a
pace.
He
flew
around
the
bend
&
his
back
wheel
just
dropped
off
the
track
onto
the
soft
stuff
&
there
is
no
coming
back
from
that,
he
fell
quite
heavily
&
spent
a
couple
of
minutes
trying
to
fix
his
bike
but
had
to
go
on
without
a
front
mech.
I'm
desperately
hoping
it
wasn't
me
that
put
him
off
&
luckily
for
me
most
of
his
facial
damage
was
done
on
'F
&
M'
where
he
faceplanted
literally.
Very
painful
&
he
still
couldn't
talk
properly
by
the
finish-Which
proves
the
point
that
mtbing
isn't
tennis.

Jon
Webb
was
going
like
a
train
again
&
young
David
Cain
the
winner
seemed
to
putting
in
more
of
an
effort
this
week.
Becki
had
her
regulation
bunch
of
riders
following
her,
for
some
strange
reason
2-3
riders
are
always
in
tow
(strange
but
true)
John
the
mechanic
had
brought
his
own
fan
club,
who
wouldn't
have
been
out
of
place
at
a
boy
band
concert,
very
vociferous
in
their
support
&
I'm
sure
John
appreciated
it.
Everyone
seemed
to
be
putting
in
loads
of
effort
&
on
this
course
if
you're
not
climbing
you're
doing
something
technical
so
there
were
no
rest
periods
&
everyone
looked
suitably
exhausted
at
the
finish.
See
you
next
week.
