Nirvana
2003 Challenge Cup Report
by Simon Thomas
Tues
9th
September
Last
night
was
the
last
race
in
our
3
race
series.
It
was
the
best
so
far
with
lots
of
people
doing
pb's.
Richard
Nash
just
scraped
under
50mins.
Jake
got
under
60
&
Alan
Tilling
stayed
on
his
bike
for
3
full
laps.
Commiserations
to
Richard
Bateman
who
dislocated
his
finger
on
F&M
(see
picture)
Hannah
Reynolds
never
having
seen
the
course
B/4
raced
right
into
F&M
with
a
predictable
outcome.

But
the
star
of
the
night
was
16year
old
Alex
Hale
who
did
a
time
of
52.12
which
gave
him
42pts
added
with
the
others
gave
him
a
total
of
141
to
win
a
Rocky
Mountain
Vertex
frame
&
becoming
Nirvana
Champion
2003.

We
arrived
in
plenty
of
time
this
week
&
decided
to
take
up
our
positions
at
F
&
M.
Just
before
reaching
it
we
bumped
into
Richard
B.
who
I
asked
why
he
wasn't
racing
&
he
held
up
his
hand.
I
glanced
at
it
&
thought
'bit
of
graze
what's
the
big
dea.......aahhhh
the
fingers
pointing
the
wrong
way!!!'
He
was
remarkably
calm
under
the
circumstances
&
I
left
him
strolling
back
to
his
car.
Our
appetite
whetted
we
continued
on
&
picked
a
prime
position,
along
with
the
other
ghoulish
spectators.

F
&
M
is
looking
well
tricky
now,
with
it
being
so
dusty,
the
dirt
has
collected
at
the
bottom
making
it
extremely
difficult
to
make
the
LH
turn.
Some
people
ie.
Jon
Webb
fly
down
it
&
others
teeter
carefully
&
eventually
fall
off.
Most
people
have
a
little
dab
but
manage
to
stay
on
their
bike.
Luckily
I
managed
to
figure
out
the
art
of
capturing
the
moment
with
a
digital
instamatic
in
the
dark.
Point
at
where
most
people
fall
off,
pre
focus
&
then
snap.
Luckily,
the
riders
obliged.
Aided
I
have
to
say
by
Joe
campbell
shouting
'WELL
DONE'
at
which
point
a
fair
few
people
fell
off.
Once
it
got
a
bit
dark
we
ventured
down
to
the
finish
line
to
see
how
things
were
progressing.
Once
again
everyone
looked
exhausted
with
a
few
sprints
for
the
line.

With
the
race
over
it
was
round
to
Neil
Lodge's
house
at
the
foot
of
Ranmore
for
a
BBQ
&
prize
giving.
Guy
Williams
was
in
his
element
cooking
the
meat
&
a
great
time
was
had
by
all.
What
a
nice
way
to
end
a
summers
riding,
as
if
to
prove
it
rain
started
falling
while
everyone
was
leaving.
