Nirvana 2005 Challenge Cup Report
by Simon Thomas

Tuesday night saw the first round of the Nirvana Challenge cup. Fifteen riders set off at the same time with the handicap to be determined on their times in this race with penalties for finishing after a certain time.

The start was at the bottom of 'follow through' meaning the start was a little bit kinder than previously going slightly downhill initially, leading up to 'wave of mutilation' . Continuing along past 'punch the clock', along to  F & M' then back up the torturous climb to then go down 'white jam' then all the way back up, down 'follow through' which completes the lap. Then off again for another two laps.

First across the line was Jamie Newall, 2nd Marcus Brueton & 3rd Dylan Bexley.

No serious crashes but lots of good riding.

Thanks to Jo & Mike for helping to set up & marshall.

The race from a spectators point of view.

We set off to find the start as it was in a different place to previously & found it easily. We had to marshall at the top of 'follow through' for the first lap, which was handy as I was able to get snaps of most of the riders. On the first lap some people even gave a smile, that would change as the race progressed, with the recent downpour of yesterday making the going tough. I then headed for 'f & m' hoping for the inevitable crashes,  but we were to be left disappointed. The standard of riding was superb & everyone rode it very well. The little group of ghoulish spectators who had gathered there, did start to barrack the only rider to walk down (Nick) on the 3rd lap. But we quickly shut up when he explained a previous crash on 'wave of mutilation' had snapped his rear brake lever off. He did well to carry on riding. I did hear tell of a nice little crash at the bottom of 'White jam' on some particularly slippery roots, but no crash in motion pictures only the aftermath. Our observation point will be the nice big fallen tree on 'wave of mutilation' next week.

The most amusing moment of the evening was when most of the riders were assembled at the finish line & we were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the last rider. Two riders out for an evening bimble, came down 'follow through' only to look up & see an assembled bunch of 20 people watching their descent, which promptly went all pear shaped at the last lip. Sorry lads.
