KAKATAK 4

The day dawned bright & Simon was up at the crack of dawn delivering checkpoint punches.
I busied myself with packing sandwiches, drink, chocolate cake & woolly hat in preparation for manning checkpoint 9. First though, a bunch of eager mountain bikers to set on their way. So into the shop to help Paul & Simon with dishing out maps etc. My deliberate error of omitting the value of checkpoint 6 on the map, was soon spotted. (mental note 'must do better next time')

St Martha's church-Beautiful location & Jon Webb, eventual winner looking remarkably fresh.

The start is always good fun with everyone disappearing off in different directions. Jon visited checkpoint 2 first, closely followed by 1. Both with horrendous climbs. Simon was hoping to make it deliberately difficult this time, hoping to give you all tough choices of which checkpoints to visit. Amazingly, a good number still managed to get every checkpoint. The mileage being approx 42miles if all were visited.

My wait at checkpoint 9 for the first rider was long enough for me to wonder if I was in the right place. I began to swing my punch jauntily, hoping any passing rider would spot me. This did attract a few odd looks from passing churchgoers, but I was beyond embarrassment at this point.

Arriving at St Martha's

At last the participants began arriving. Sweating profusely having ridden through deep soft sand & up approx 500ft of climbing. There was a mixture of choices from there, as to the direction to then take. Most opted to go back the way they came.

At one point two llama's went walking past-yes llama's! I quickly pulled out my camera only for it to fail at the crucial point. Who says Surrey is tame?

A seat for dwarf's

Everyone seemed in good spirits, how could you fail to enjoy such a gorgeous day as this. Days like these make you realise why we ride. After 3hours 22minutes of riding Jon ambled into the finish to win. Closely followed by Tom Watt, who not being from around these parts did amazingly well to finish 9mins later. Then John Leyland & Mark Harrison finished in 3rd to split the 3rd place prize of £25!

Well done to all those who took part & a big thank you to Jackie, Paul, Matt & Jake for manning checkpoints.
