KAKATAK 5 Sunday 6th March 2005

Luckily after weeks of grim weather, the weather gods were kind to us. It was bright & sunny if bitterly cold. A good part of the previous week had been spent discussing how to stay warm at the checkpoints. Numerous layers were the answer & a nice warm thermos for Simon's pot noodle. Kit, being only fifteen, rode to his checkpoint wearing shorts! Richard being ****y took his pipe & slippers.

Thanks to everybody who entered for being keen & good natured, everyone turned up in good time. It was rather strange how everyone headed off in the same direction at the beginning, but obviously everyone had a plan. We had introduced a few new checkpoints & different lunch stop so we were hoping to catch you all out. We also thought it would be very hard. And this did prove to be the case, with probably the fewest number ever visiting all the checkpoints. Indeed most people didn't stop for lunch at the Dukes Head, Brockham, but planned to call in after the event. However, there was a notable exception in Rick Featherstone, the winner, who arrived back at 1.10pm having visited all the checkpoints. I was amazed. 2nd place went to Nick Dean back at 1.44pm & Tom Watt at 1.49pm. Well done.

Special mention needs to go to Iwona Szmyd, who spent quite a bit of time looking for checkpoints 1 & 2, which sadly were not live checkpoints. Better luck next time.

Too cold to take too many pictures but here they are:

Three rapscallions

Once again, thanks to all those who took part & thank to Simon, Richard, Jake & Kit for being marshalls.
