A fork that sticks in its travel, weeps oil down the leg or feels vague through braking bumps can make an otherwise brilliant bike feel poor. Knowing how to maintain suspension forks is less about stripping them down every weekend and more about doing the small jobs consistently, then recognising when a proper workshop service is due.
For trail and e-MTB riders, forks live a hard life. Mud, dust, grit and pressure-washer spray all work their way towards the seals. Add the extra weight and repeated braking loads of an e-bike, and neglect soon shows up as rough action, premature bushing wear and expensive internal damage. A few minutes after a ride protects performance far better than a last-minute clean before a big day out.
Start with the checks that prevent damage
Before cleaning, compress the fork a few times and look at how it moves. It should use the first part of its travel without a clunk, hesitation or scraping sensation. A little oil sheen on the stanchion can be normal after a ride, particularly on a freshly serviced fork. A visible ring of oil that returns quickly after wiping, or oil running down the fork leg, is not.
Check the stanchions closely in good light. They need to be clean and free from deep scratches, chips or corrosion. Minor marks can sometimes be carefully assessed and dealt with, but a damaged stanchion can quickly destroy a seal. Do not keep riding it in the hope that it will bed in.
Also look for play. Hold the front brake on and gently rock the bike forwards and backwards with your hand around the lower leg and crown area. Movement at the headset is common and should be ruled out first. If the fork itself has a distinct knock or lateral movement, it may need bushing inspection. That is a workshop job, not something to mask with extra air pressure or rebound damping.
How to maintain suspension forks after every muddy ride
The best routine is simple: rinse, clean, dry and inspect. Use a gentle hose or bucket and sponge to remove mud from the fork arch, lower legs and around the seals. Avoid directing a pressure washer at the wiper seals, adjusters, crown or headset. Water forced past a seal brings grit with it and can contaminate the lubricating oil inside the lowers.
Once the mud is gone, wipe the stanchions with a clean, soft cloth. Compress the fork once or twice, then wipe again. This lifts the thin line of dirt that can collect at the seal edge. If grit remains embedded around the wipers, stop there rather than poking at it with a screwdriver, cable tie or anything sharp. Damaging the sealing lip is an easy way to create a leak.
Finish by drying the fork and checking that the rebound and compression adjusters turn normally. If the bike has been ridden through deep water or exceptionally foul winter conditions, do not assume a quick wipe is enough. Bring the lower-leg service forward. Clean oil and foam rings are what keep the stanchions lubricated as they slide through the seals.
Never spray general-purpose penetrating oil, chain lubricant or silicone polish around the seals. These products can attract dirt, affect rubber components or leave a residue that does more harm than good. Use suspension-specific products only, and only where the fork manufacturer specifies.
Set it up properly before chasing a fault
A fork can feel harsh because it is dirty, but it can also feel harsh because it is poorly set up. Record your air pressure, rebound position and any compression settings somewhere useful before changing anything. That gives you a reliable baseline after a service or when experimenting with setup.
Check sag in your normal riding kit, ideally with the same pack, water and shoes you use on the trail. For many trail bikes, around 15 to 20 per cent sag at the fork is a sensible starting point, but the right figure depends on the bike, riding style and fork travel. A rider pushing hard on steep Surrey Hills roots may prefer a different balance from someone riding long, rocky natural descents.
Use full travel sensibly. If the O-ring never gets close to the end of the stanchion, do not automatically let more air out. First consider whether the terrain has actually demanded it and whether compression damping is too firm. Conversely, frequent harsh bottom-outs call for a measured setup change, not simply winding every dial closed. Air pressure supports the rider; volume spacers shape the spring curve; damping controls the speed of movement. They are related, but they do different jobs.
For air forks, use a proper suspension pump and replace the valve cap afterwards. Check pressure when the fork is clean and at a similar temperature to your usual riding conditions. Do not use a tyre gauge or assume the pump reading is perfect the instant you remove it - a small amount of air is lost from the pump hose, not necessarily from the fork itself.
Know the difference between a lower-leg service and a full service
Most modern suspension forks have two distinct service levels. A lower-leg service involves removing the lowers, cleaning them thoroughly, replacing or assessing seals and foam rings, and refilling with the correct lubricating oil. It addresses the contamination that affects small-bump sensitivity and protects the stanchion and bushings.
A full service goes further. It includes the air spring and damper, with fresh fluids and seals as required. The damper controls rebound and compression, so its oil condition matters just as much as the visible cleanliness of the fork. If rebound becomes inconsistent, compression damping does little, or the fork makes unusual squelching or knocking sounds, a full inspection is sensible.
Manufacturers publish service intervals in riding hours, and they are a useful guide rather than a marketing exercise. As a broad rule, enthusiastic UK mountain biking often justifies a lower-leg service around every 50 hours and a more comprehensive service around every 100 to 200 hours, depending on the fork and manufacturer guidance. Wet grit, uplift days, bike-park riding and frequent e-MTB use can shorten that interval considerably.
Keep a note on your phone of major rides and service dates. Riders rarely count every hour exactly, but a rough record prevents the familiar situation where a fork has done two winters, several holidays and dozens of wet rides with no attention because it still technically moves.
What a confident home mechanic can do
Cleaning, setup checks and external inspection belong in every rider's toolkit. A careful home mechanic with the correct tools, manufacturer instructions and fluids can also carry out a lower-leg service on some forks. The work is methodical rather than mysterious, but precision matters. Oil volumes, seal orientation, crush washers, torque settings and cleanliness are all critical.
The trade-off is straightforward. Doing the job yourself can save time and helps you understand your bike. Getting a step wrong can contaminate the damper, damage threads, tear a seal or leave the fork under-lubricated. If you are unsure about identifying a damper cartridge, measuring oil accurately or handling an air spring safely, book it in.
Do not open a damper without the proper procedure and equipment. Some units are pressurised, and damper servicing can require specialist tools and bleeding techniques to work correctly. The same applies if you find brown or milky oil, metal particles, scored stanchions or obvious bushing play. Those are signs to stop riding and have the fork assessed before a small issue becomes a replacement-part bill.
Make fork care part of the whole-bike routine
Suspension performance is affected by more than the fork itself. A loose headset can mimic a fork knock, a worn front hub bearing can feel like bushing play, and an overtightened brake hose guide can restrict movement. When you wash the bike, give the front end a quick once-over: axle tightness, brake caliper bolts, headset adjustment and hose routing all deserve attention.
For heavier e-MTBs, this routine is especially worthwhile. The extra mass does not make a fork fragile, but it does increase the load through rough ground and under braking. Keeping pressures and damping settings recorded, cleaning after wet rides and servicing on time preserves the controlled front-end feel that makes a capable bike enjoyable to ride.
A well-maintained fork should disappear beneath you: supple over roots, calm in compressions and predictable when the trail turns rough. If yours is asking for attention, deal with it before the next big ride. Fresh seals and oil are far cheaper than worn stanchions, and a good workshop service gives you the confidence to point the bike at the trail rather than listen for the next clunk.
