A tyre that folds over on the first rooty corner is too soft. A tyre that skips across wet roots and chatters your hands numb is usually too hard. If you are wondering what tyre pressure for trail riding is right, the honest answer is that there is no magic number - but there is a sensible place to start.

Tyre pressure is one of the quickest, cheapest changes you can make to an MTB or e-MTB. It affects grip, comfort, rolling speed, braking control and how well your wheels survive a hard landing. Get it close and the bike feels planted and predictable. Get it badly wrong and even the best suspension and tyres will feel compromised.

What tyre pressure for trail riding is a good start?

For a modern trail bike with 2.4-2.6in tubeless tyres, a rider weighing around 70-85kg in full riding kit can start at 21-23psi in the front and 23-25psi in the rear. The rear tyre normally needs a little more pressure because it carries more of your weight and takes more hits when climbing, landing and braking.

Those figures are a starting point, not a rule. A lighter rider on soft, loamy trails may be happy below them. A heavier rider, a rider on rocky ground, or anyone on an e-bike may need more. Use a reliable gauge, make one small change at a time, and pay attention to what the bike is telling you.

If you prefer bar, 20psi is roughly 1.4 bar, 22psi is 1.5 bar and 25psi is 1.7 bar. Small changes matter. One psi can be noticeable, particularly at the front.

The rear has a tougher job. It supports more body weight, drives the bike uphill and sees heavier square-edge impacts. Run it too soft and you risk rim strikes, tyre squirm and a vague feeling when loading the bike through a berm. It may also feel slow on smoother climbs because the casing is moving excessively.

That is why a 2psi difference front to rear is common. Some riders need 3psi or more, especially on a heavier bike or when using a lighter rear casing.

The factors that change your ideal pressure

Rider weight and riding kit

Your riding weight is your body weight plus helmet, shoes, pack, water and everything else you take out. If you are carrying tools, waterproofs and a full bladder pack for a long day, that is meaningful extra load on the tyres.

As a broad guide, riders outside the 70-85kg middle ground should adjust by around 1psi for every 5-7kg. It is not an exact formula, because riding style matters too, but it gets you close. A smooth 90kg rider may use less pressure than a 75kg rider who lands heavily and attacks every root section.

Tyre width, casing and compound

A 2.6in tyre has more air volume than a 2.35in tyre, so it can normally be run at lower pressure for a similar level of support. Do not simply transfer pressures from an older, narrower tyre setup to a modern high-volume trail tyre.

Casing construction matters just as much. A reinforced trail or enduro casing is more supportive and better protected against cuts and rim impacts than a lightweight XC-style casing. It may let you run lower pressure with confidence. A supple lightweight tyre can feel brilliant, but it often needs another psi or two if your local trails are rocky or you ride with real pace.

Rubber compound affects grip but does not remove the need for correct pressure. A soft compound at excessive pressure will still skate over wet roots. A firmer compound at the right pressure can often feel more controlled than you expect.

Tubeless, tubes and inserts

Tubeless is the normal choice for performance trail riding because it allows lower pressures with less risk of pinch punctures. Sealant also handles many small punctures before they become a trailside repair.

With inner tubes, start a little higher, particularly in the rear. A hard rim strike can pinch the tube between rim and tyre, causing the familiar double-hole puncture. For most trail riders, that makes tubes less forgiving when experimenting with lower pressures.

Tyre inserts add rim protection and casing support. They can allow a lower-pressure setup, but they are not a free pass to run very soft tyres. If the bike feels vague, burps sealant in hard turns, or repeatedly bottoms the tyre onto the rim, add pressure. An insert is there to widen the usable window and protect expensive wheels, not to ignore the basics.

Trail surface and weather

Surrey Hills-style rooty singletrack rewards a little compliance, especially when it is wet. Lowering the front tyre by 1psi can improve grip and reduce deflection, helping the bike track rather than ping from root to root.

On dry, hard-packed trails with lots of compressions and fast berms, a little more pressure can make the bike feel more supportive. Sharp rocks, square edges and fast bike-park-style riding also call for a firmer setup, particularly at the rear.

Cold weather can lower tyre pressure slightly, while a hot day or a bike left in the sun can raise it. Check pressures before the ride rather than assuming last weekend's setting is still correct.

How to tune pressure on the trail

If the front end washes without warning, feels harsh over small roots or keeps deflecting off wet surfaces, try dropping 1psi from the front. If it rolls heavily in turns, squirms under braking or you feel the rim through bigger impacts, put 1psi back in.

At the rear, look for traction under climbing and braking, but do not sacrifice wheel protection. If the rear breaks traction too easily on technical climbs, try 1psi less. Common mistakes that cost grip and tyres

The most common mistake is copying another rider's numbers. Their tyres, rims, weight, inserts and riding style may be completely different. A 60kg rider on a light trail bike should not blindly use the rear pressure of a 95kg rider on a full-power e-MTB.

The second is treating pressure as set-and-forget. New tyres, different trails, a loaded pack and wet winter roots all justify a check. The third is relying on a thumb squeeze. It can tell you if a tyre is nearly flat, but not whether it is 21psi or 25psi. A decent digital gauge is one of the most useful bits of workshop kit you can own.

Finally, stay within the tyre and rim manufacturer's stated limits. Very low pressures can damage rims and unseat tyres; excessive pressures can reduce grip and may exceed component guidance. The safe, fast setup sits between those extremes.
