A Hope upgrade is rarely bought because the existing part has simply stopped working. It is usually bought because you want a brake you can trust on a long descent, a hub that keeps driving through a wet winter, or a wheelset that can take repeated hard riding without feeling vague. This Hope components buying guide is for riders who want to spend properly once, choose the right specification, and keep their bike serviceable for years.
Hope has earned its place on serious mountain bikes through UK-made engineering, readily available spares and a refusal to treat key components as disposable. That does not mean every Hope part is automatically the right answer for every bike. Rotor size, hub standards, riding weight, tyre choice, frame clearance and the type of trails you actually ride all matter more than an anodised finish.
Start with the part that is holding your bike back
The best upgrade is not necessarily the most visible one. Think about the issue you are trying to solve. If your brakes fade on steep, sustained descents, spending on cranks will not improve your day. If you have repeatedly damaged rear wheels, a stronger rim and correctly tensioned build deserve priority over more brake power.
For most mountain bikers, Hope upgrades fall into four useful areas: brakes, wheels and hubs, cranks and bottom brackets, and contact points such as pedals. Decide which area has the greatest effect on confidence, reliability or ride feel, then make sure it suits the bike as a whole.
An e-MTB deserves particularly honest assessment. The additional mass, speed and torque place more demand on brakes, wheels, drivetrains and bearings. A component that is ample for occasional trail-centre laps on a lightweight bike may not be the sensible choice for regular rocky descents on an Orbea Wild, Orange Phase or similar full-power machine.
Choosing Hope brakes for your riding
Hope Tech 4 brakes are powerful, adjustable and built to be serviced rather than replaced. The lever offers bite-point and reach adjustment, while the caliper choice determines much of the braking character. The important question is not simply, “Which is the most powerful?” It is whether you need more power, better heat management or a lighter setup.
E4 or V4 calipers?
The Tech 4 E4 is a strong all-round choice for aggressive trail and enduro riding. It provides ample power for most riders and works well where control matters as much as outright stopping force. On a capable trail bike, it is often the sensible point where braking performance, weight and cost meet.
The Tech 4 V4 has larger pistons and is intended for riders who ask more of their brakes: long alpine-style descents, steep technical terrain, heavier riders, bike-park use and full-power e-MTBs. It is not excessive simply because it is powerful. But on flatter local loops or a light short-travel bike, its benefits may be less obvious than investing in better tyres or suspension setup.
Rotor size is part of the system, not an afterthought. A larger rotor gives more leverage and thermal capacity, often delivering the improvement riders are looking for without changing calipers. Many aggressive bikes benefit from a 200mm or 203mm front rotor, with 180mm to 203mm at the rear depending on frame clearance, rider weight and intended use. Always confirm the frame and fork manufacturer’s maximum rotor size and select the correct mount adaptor.
Pads also change the result. Sintered pads generally cope better with wet, gritty conditions and heat, though they can be noisier. Organic pads can offer a quieter, more immediate feel in dry conditions but tend to wear faster in UK winter mud. There is no universal winner. The right pad is the one that matches the conditions and your tolerance for noise, wear and maintenance.
Hope wheels and hubs: get the standards right first
A quality wheelset can make a bike feel more direct, predictable and dependable, but it is also the Hope purchase where compatibility mistakes are easiest to make. Before choosing a hub, establish the exact front and rear axle standards, dropout widths, brake rotor fitting, freehub body and rim size.
Hope Pro 5 hubs are a favourite for good reasons: quick engagement, solid sealing, straightforward servicing and strong spare-parts support. The sound is distinctive, but the real advantage is that a hub can be maintained after seasons of riding rather than binned when bearings or a freehub need attention.
Check whether your bike uses Boost, Super Boost or another spacing standard, and whether it takes a microspline, XD or Shimano HG freehub. These details are not interchangeable. If you are moving a wheelset between bikes, end caps and freehub conversions can sometimes make that possible, but confirm the full specification before assuming a swap will work.
Rim width should follow tyre choice
Hope Fortus wheelsets are aimed at hard trail, enduro and e-MTB riding, with rim widths selected around modern tyre volumes. A wider rim can give a larger tyre more support at lower pressures, improving stability and reducing that vague, folding sensation through berms. Go too wide for the tyre, however, and the profile can become overly squared off, reducing predictable cornering.
As a useful starting point, a 30mm internal rim width suits many 2.4in to 2.6in aggressive trail tyres. Heavier e-MTB riders or those running very high-volume tyres may have good reason to consider a more supportive option. Your local terrain matters here. Chalk, roots and wet Surrey singletrack ask different questions from repeated rock strikes in the mountains, though durable wheels are never wasted on either.
A factory wheel is only one part of reliability. Spoke tension should be checked after initial bedding-in, and a wheel that begins to loosen should be dealt with early. A short workshop check is considerably cheaper than riding a minor wobble until it becomes damaged spokes, rim cracks and worn bearings.
Cranks, bottom brackets and pedals
Hope EVO cranks are a worthwhile choice for riders who value stiffness, clean machining and long-term parts support. They also make sense when replacing damaged cranks or building a bike where the rest of the specification deserves the same standard. They are not a shortcut to more speed. If your current cranks are sound, the practical gain may be durability and appearance rather than a dramatic change on the trail.
Bottom bracket compatibility needs care. Identify the frame shell standard, crank spindle diameter and required chainline before ordering. Press-fit and threaded systems require different parts, and correct installation matters as much as the component itself. A badly prepared or incorrectly fitted bottom bracket can creak regardless of the logo on the cups.
Hope Union pedals are available in different platform sizes, so choose around shoe size and riding style. A larger platform can feel more planted on rough descents, while a smaller option may offer better clearance and suit riders with smaller feet. Clipless pedals reward a precise setup: use the supplied cleats, set release tension sensibly, and give yourself time to adapt before taking them straight into a wet technical ride.
Do not buy colour before compatibility
Hope’s colour options are part of the appeal, particularly when finishing a custom build. There is nothing wrong with wanting a bike that looks properly yours. Just treat colour as the final decision, after standards, performance and service needs are settled.
Before buying any Hope component, check the following against your bike’s specification:
- Axle widths, hub spacing and freehub standard for wheels or hubs
- Brake mount type, approved rotor sizes and rotor thickness
- Frame bottom bracket standard, crank spindle and required chainline
- Handlebar diameter and shifter or dropper mounting requirements
- Tyre clearance, rim width and the intended level of riding
Budget for fitting and ongoing care
Premium components reward proper installation. Brakes need correctly routed hoses, clean cuts, secure olives and inserts, then a careful bleed and bed-in process. Wheels need the right tyre, tubeless tape, valve and sealant arrangement. Cranks and bottom brackets need correct torque, grease where specified and alignment checks.
